NOW ZMA

NOW ZMA supposedly supports cell growth and tissue repair. It contributes to a healthy immune system and aids exercise recovery.

Does NOW ZMA really accomplish all of these functions? Is it worth a try? Read on to find the answers to these questions and learn our opinion of NOW ZMA.

NOW ZMA Ingredients

ZMA supplements are a combination of zinc, magnesium, and vitamin B6. This formulation was specifically selected to promote exercise recovery.

Let’s look closer at the ingredients in NOW ZMA to see if they can really make an impact.

Zinc. Zinc is an important mineral for the immune system, cellular metabolism, and protein synthesis.

Zinc with exercise may benefit the immune system. In one study, zinc blocked exercise-induced increases in reactive oxygen. [1] So it may benefit exercise stress and recovery.

The recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for zinc in adults older than 19 years is 11 mg for males and 8 mg for females. NOW ZMA has 15 mg of zinc, or a 750% daily value. But even this amount shouldn’t cause side effects.

Magnesium. Magnesium promotes muscle and nerve function.

Exercise depletes magnesium, which could impair metabolism and muscle function. In addition, many of us don’t get enough magnesium in the first place. So replenishing magnesium may be beneficial for exercise and wellness. One research paper explored the benefits of magnesium in exercise and immune function. [2]

The RDA for magnesium is 400 for males and 310 for females ages 19 to 30; for adults over age 31, it’s 420 for males and 320 for females.

More than 350 mg of magnesium could cause kidney failure, diarrhea, or abdominal cramping for some. NOW ZMA contains 450 mg magnesium, or a 113% daily value.

Vitamin B6. Vitamin B6 is involved in many enzyme reactions, including protein metabolism, which is important to muscle growth.

During exercise, vitamin B6 plays important roles in gluconeogenesis and glycogenolysis, helping maintain proper blood glucose levels. [3]

For ages 19 to 50, the RDA is 1.3 mg; for those over 51, it’s 1.7 mg for males and 1.5 mg for females. NOW ZMA has 30 mg, or a 200% daily value.

100 mg or more vitamin B6 could cause nausea, heartburn, or ataxia (loss of movement control).

NOW ZMA also contains a 2.4 g blend of zinc L-methionine, zinc aspartate, magnesium aspartate, and pyridoxine HCl. So it’s unclear how much of each ingredient is actually in the product.

NOW ZMA User Results

Amazingly, 47 out of 79 people gave NOW ZMA 5/5 stars on Amazon.com.

Jerry Watkins said: “Seems to help recovery and I feel like I’m getting more rest out of my sleep . . . This is the best priced ZMA supplement that I have been able to find.”

Although most ZMA products are similar, the NOW brand seems to come with reliability as well as a good price.

Oregonian said: “It’s ZMA folks. And as such, the formula is the same as any other ZMA, but I trust NOW brands and use them almost exclusively. “

Unfortunately, a few people did not appreciate NOW ZMA. Tommythejett said, “I have used several others before this one. Definitely the lowest of the 3 in performance. If you’re looking to get one, avoid this.”

ZMA supplements like NOW ZMA have been reported to boost testosterone levels, but this result has not been proven in studies.

Taking NOW ZMA

The supplement facts say to take 3 capsules (men) or 2 capsules (women) daily on an empty stomach, 30 to 60 minutes before bedtime.

Gene X mentioned on Amazon.com that most ZMA capsules require just 1 pill rather than 3. With 90 capsules in a bottle, though, NOW ZMA should last a month.

NOW ZMA: Our Opinion

NOW ZMA seems like a quality product as far as ZMA supplements go. At just $11.74 at Amazon.com, it’s probably the least expensive, too. But it’s not definitively guaranteed to work. If you decide to try NOW ZMA, don’t expect to see astounding results.
